3 Vegetables You Can Grow In Containers

It’s really becoming more popular to grow you own fruit and vegetables these days.  There are all sorts of reasons for this such as worrying about pesticides being used in farming; also people want their kids to understand where their food has come from.  Planting vegetables in some kind of container is often the best way to get started if you are just a novice.

Potatoes
Often when people get started with growing their own vegetables they start off planting potatoes in planter bags.  One of the great things about potatoes is that there are so many different ways you can eat them.  They can be fried, baked, mashed and new potatoes can be used in a salad.  Even if you’ve never grown any vegetables, potatoes are really easy.  Some people simply plant some old potatoes that have begun sprouting into some compost, whilst other people buy seed potatoes.  There are all sorts of varieties you can grow, so you can really experiment.

Cabbages
Although a lot of people say they hate cabbages, this is often because they’ve been overcooked.  If you learn how to cook them properly or you just eat them raw, they can taste fantastic.  Also, if you’re looking to grow vegetables that are also ornamental, cabbages work very well in this regard.  You can even get cabbages that are purple!  Cabbages can also be grown all year round.

Carrots
Carrots are another very versatile vegetable that can be grown for many months of the year.  Although we tend to think that carrots only come in one shape and size, there are actually a number of different ones that you can grow.  If you only have a very small container there are short carrots such as Rondo and Suko that can be grown.  However, if you want to grow the bigger size of carrot, then the container should be 12 inches deep or more.
