Bahama Shutters – Great For Protection From Storms

Bahama shutters are external shutters. They differ from some other types of shutters in that they’re attached to the top of the window where they are hinged so that when opened the bottom is held out from the window. When opened fully shutters provide a type of awning  over the window.

Depending on the angle that the shutter is open the amount of light that enters into the room will differ. Under most circumstances the shutter is left wide open however when there is bad weather the shutter can be closed tight against the window where it gives added protection.

Traditionally these shutters were made from wood. However these days you can find shutters made from PVC, fiberglass, or aluminum. Aluminum shutters are very popular. They are very light and easy to open and close, yet at the same time they also provide greater protection against storms in bad weather. They’re also much easier to maintain than wood shutters for example.

Not only are shutters great for providing protection against storms and hurricanes but they also add to the resale value of the home.

Shutters are found in a wide array of colors thus it is very easy to color-coordinate them with the rest of your home. Of course, wood shutters are the most difficult to maintain, particularly if you live in an area that is very humid as wood does not generally do as well in those conditions. Wood shutters can either be stained light or dark colored or if you want you can paint them. In some ways, painting with a very good quality exterior paint can help protect your wood shutters from damage.

Bahama shutters are usually made with fixed louvers. This allows plenty of light and air circulation into the room even when the shutters are close. The louvers are usually slanted downward so that rain cannot easily enter into a room.

While traditionally Bahama window shutters were usually used in the southern USA regions, they are becoming much more popular as a style in many different places now, as they really can add to the outward appearance of a home.
