Many times , when homeowners think about controlling their home air quality, they tend to just change the air filters on their furnace. There are many more issues that can affect home air quality than good furnace filters. Even Honeywell filters won’t stop a gas. Carbon monoxide is known as the silent killer because it doesn’t smell and can be in your home without you knowing it. It is a by-product of burning things such as many fossil fuels. You wouldn’t believe it, but the main contributor to carbon monoxide in the home is your fireplace. Many times a chimney will get clogged by a bird’s nest or something simple like that. Your water heater and furnace may also be producers of CO if they are gas fueled.
About the only way to protect your house and it’s occupants is to install CO detectors. You should be sure that there is one in each bedroom, or at least in the hallway outside the bedrooms. Consider installing them near the floor as possible and away from drafty areas to decrease the false readings.
Another item in your home that dos effect the air quality if the air handler. This is the unit that moves the air through your home furnace or air conditioner. In many cases, this is located in a hallway it maybe in the basement. It is important not to store chemicals near this as the fumes may get pulled in and distributed throughout your house. So, it would be a bad idea to store paints or cleaning chemicals near this. In fact, all potentially harmful chemicals should be stored outside in the garage or in an outdoor shed, to prevent any chance of toxic fumes in your house.
If you do store them in an area attached to your home, think about installed an exhaust fan to remove any fume buildup.
