The cottage home is an ephemeral concept. Certain factors need to be present, though.

The home should be less than 2,000 square feet. It should appear compact on the inside. Yet it should feel spacious inside.

The entryway should be human-sized and welcoming.

The exterior should use materials found near where the home is built.

The house should exhibit unique craftsmanship that shows the character of the builder and owner.

Sashed windows are almost a must. They keep the home small and inviting, and create a sense of security.

The building should be oriented to take advantage of the sun in the cooler months. In warmer months, it should make use of on-site shade.

Landscaping should be informal but lush. Garden lights emit a friendly glow and give a nice extra touch.

The cottage should have indoor-outdoors areas like patios, porches, and sunrooms to connect it with its natural surroundings.

Other touches include cozy spots for curling up and reading, high-pitched roofs, low ceilings, natural wood flooring, and built-in storage.

A cottage house not only makes you feel at home, but it’s energy efficient and conserves resources with the “less-is-more” principle. It’s the opposite of the wasteful McMansion and the ostentatiousness of too much space and ornamentation. A cottage is meant to feel like home.

Home Decorating

Home interior decorating is a wonderful occasion for you to convey your taste. It allows you to showcase your enthusiasms: in furnishings, painting and even world cultures. Every decorating class is different. Some are intricate while others are simple. Whatever your style, there is a design category to go with your personal qualities as well as your budget.

Budget is generally a priority when sketching out strategies for redoing your home. It is easy to look at an image and imagine that you can remake it in your house. Then again, sometimes the fine points of these images are extremely high-priced which may make the process frustrating for you. Resist the inclination to become saddened, though. There are always alternate ideas to help you complete your ultimate interior decor. Sources such as tv are stimulating for ideas for home interior decorating. Using these resources you’re bound to see alternatives for any issues you may bump into.

If you have a thing about details, there are several designs available. Primitive interior decorating is fascinating because it uses old objects. It’s a grand chance to display shabby chic items. This class suggests using items which appear really old and worn. If you are fond of antiques, primitive interior decorating might be right for you.

Another home decor type that you might find exciting is whimsical. This type permits you to go wild using your mind’s eye. Using any of your preferred hues, your home should be bedecked completely with a variety of colors. This home interior decorating strategy revolves around color. The principle to remember is, if you select vibrant colors, stick to that tint. If you employ cool colors, stick with a corresponding family.

If you have trouble moving out of the past into contemporary home design, historical style may possibly be your cup of tea. This home decorating class combines the contemporary approach with the stunning look of the past. Breathing space is focal in the traditional genre.

The above styles are merely a taste of the abundant methods for decorating. There are many, many ways to go about it and there is doubtless one that’s sure to meet your wishes so you can renovate your place into a refuge of pleasure.

Gardening

I don’t know what it is about a garden that attracts humans to them. Whatever the basis, throughout history they’ve always been a mythical item, and the stage of some principal events. According to Christian tradition, humankind was invented in the Garden of Eden and Jesus was raised from the dead in one. Buddhists build gardens to let nature permeate their environment. And very nearly every well known royal edifice has a garden. But what’s so great about them? They’re merely a gathering of vegetation, in summary.

Obviously, the motivator for people to grow fruits and vegetables in gardens is obvious enough. So they can put food on the table! If you live off the fat of the land and actually live on produce from one’s garden, it’s simple to recognize the logic. But I’m thinking about those individuals who plant ornate flower gardens for the goal of appearing beautiful. There’s no pressing gain in the long run; you simply have a supply of vegetation in your yard! But, after much contemplation, there are quite a lot of theories to explain this.

In summary, one of the reasons people feel devoted to their gardens so strongly is that despite the fact that they have an instinctive longing to industrialize, there lives within everyone an ancient devotion to wild things. While this yearning may not be as intense as the craving for modernism, it is nonetheless passionate enough to oblige humanity to create gardens. This is why gardens are a fine location to carry on a meditation practice and do tai chi exercises. A garden provides a method to rapidly take a retreat from a busy society. It’s a peaceful setting with living, growing things and the soft glow of the garden lights.

Possibly we feel a type of guilt complex moving us to restore the environment and tend to it. This remorse could have its roots in the comprehension that we, not singularly but as a species, have ruined so much of the environment to make progress. Growing a garden is the least we can do to assemble a remembrance of all the trees we kill every day. This is the main motivation for individuals to take up gardening as a hobby.

Growing a garden is certainly a healthful practice, however. Any hobby that facilitates vigorous physical activity, supports the natural world, and helps what you eat can’t be harmful. So no matter what the basic cause for gardening, I argue that gardeners should stick with it. In North America specifically, where they are fighting with obesity and environmental deterioration as major problems, gardening can improve the state of human life.

We get fulfillment by building a solid woodpile knowing that it will warm us all winter. Our 10 acres of woody acreage puts out a lot of first-class trees for fuel, but as we don’t have much time, we pay for two or three cords each fall to fill out what we gather ourselves. Through familiarity, we’ve caught on to some facts about making fuel that might aid you if you’re thinking of heating your home with a wood stove.

The job of gathering firewood is made easier with some advance planning. Getting in the fuel at least a year before burning it ensures that it’s had time to properly dry out. Cured firewood has hardly a trace of moisture and burns with minor creosote. Keeping it in a woodshed enclosure that receives adequate air movement is the perfect system to cure firewood. Piling it handily in the open air in a sunlit site is an acceptable substitute.

Green wood is astonishingly effortless to split. We stopped splitting firewood manually years ago, but even with our wood splitter, the responsibility goes quicker when we work with fresh wood. Splitting also speeds up the seasoning process since more surface area of the log is uncovered. Uncured firewood sells for less money than seasoned logs, which has allowed our splitter to pay for itself within two years of purchase.

Softwood gets bashed for poor heat productivity. However, this statement is only somewhat correct. All woods put out the same number of BTUs. The difference is that soft woods are less heavy, so it takes more firewood to emit the same amount of heat.

Don’t get me wrong-we adore hardwood as an energy source, and our woodlot has so much deadfall that we have more of it than we can use. But if we didn’t have this resource, we would run across some suspicions about bringing in only hardwood. Obviously, your decision on this topic will rely on your local conditions.

When paying for firewood, evaluate the mix of pieces in the lot to discern how much is hardwood and how much is softwood types. The greater quantity of softwood in the batch, the less the fuel ought to cost.

Wood for heating is normally offered for sale in “face cords,” which is four feet high and wide if it’s piled. Stick length ought to be about 16″. If they’re greatly smaller, you’re not getting your money’s worth; if they’re bigger, they might be too big for your fireplace.

If you’ve ever eaten fresh salad greens grown near your home and picked only a few days ago, count yourself lucky. The difference between fresh greens and the stuff in bags in the store is so striking that they almost can’t be called the same food. Even the premium and organic varieties of salad greens lose something when they’re picked and packed 2,000 miles from your home and shipped to the grocery store on a truck. They’re also among the least eco-friendly of foods, since they have to be transported quickly by refrigerated truck. With the advent of plastic clamshell packaging for salad greens, there’s also the solid waste disposal issue to contend with.

After eating locally grown lettuce and other salad greens, it’s hard not to come to the inevitable conclusion that they’re really only good when picked fresh. It’s hard to go back to bag lettuce after you try locally grown, or better yet, grow your own. Fortunately, salad greens are among the easiest garden vegetables to grow. Even a tiny patch of earth will yield an amazing harvest of greens, and they mature very quickly – usually within one month of planting. If you don’t have room for a small plot of greens, you can do quite well with a container on your deck or balcony in a partially sunny spot, or even with an Aerogarden on a table in the corner of a room in your house.

The trick with growing fresh greens is to keep them moist and cool. They grow wonderfully in the early spring and late fall. In the summer, be sure to shade them from direct sunlight so they don’t turn tough and bitter. Water them frequently to keep them from drying out.

The easiest way to get a good salad mix is to buy a seed packet that contains a blend of popular salad green varieties. These include:
* Leaf lettuce
* Endive
* Arugula
* Mizuna
* Mesclun

You might also want to start a separate plot of spinach to use for salads and cooking.

Herbs and spices are playing an increasing role in American cooking. It’s been a long, slow process. Many of us remember growing up in the 1950s and 60s with only salt and pepper on the table, plus a jumble of small tins of spices in a cupboard that were only used for very special occasions. American cuisine, particularly in the Midwest, has tended to be bland, and the introduction of processed convenience foods hasn’t helped matters any.

The trend toward replacing salt with herbs and spices has been one of the delightful surprises of the twenty-first century. Pioneers like Alice Waters of Chez Panisse fame have led the charge, and everyone from restaurateurs to mothers (and fathers) cooking at home have followed suit. Nowadays, the consensus is who needs salt when you can experience the flavors of herbs and spices?

If you’re thinking of incorporating more herbs into your cooking you might be put off by the dazzling array to choose from. “What if I get the wrong one and ruin dinner?” you might be thinking. The price tag of $5 per bottle for good organic dried herbs can also add up quickly. You can solve this problem by sticking to a core group of herbs that work well for many foods and add the more exotic, specialized ones to your collection later when you get more experience with using them. Use small amounts at first and get a feel for how much is too little and how much is too much. Spice racks are available to keep your herb collection organized and ready at your fingertips while you’re in the kitchen.

Herbs and spices can be classified as mild or pungent. The mild varieties contains have a lower concentration of oils, so they impart less flavor. The pungent varieties have larger amounts of oil, so a little goes a long way. Use the milder herbs in dishes that are primarily vegetable or grain based, or finely textured fish. Reserve the pungent herbs for meat, poultry, and fish with texture similar to meat.

The mild herbs include:
* Basil – has a wonderful aroma when fresh. Heating it or drying it tones down the flavor and scent considerably. Although it’s thought of as an Italian herb, it can be used in non-ethnic dishes of many kinds and is a favorite any time tomatoes are present.

     * Cilantro – like basil, cilantro behaves more like a pungent herb in its fresh state but settles down after drying or cooking. It’s a favorite for Mexican and Lebanese recipes, and is a wonderful complement to stews with lamb or lentils.

     * Dill – pungent when fresh, dill imparts a mild tang when dried or cooked. Excellent in pasta salads and over mild varieties of fish like salmon and whitefish.

The pungent herbs include:
* Oregano – the classic herb for Italian cooking, especially tomato sauce. Strong when fresh and even stronger dried.
* Rosemary and sage – these two herbs are the standard spices for seasoning poultry dishes. A dash of rosemary also goes well in cream-based soups and sauces, such as cream of cauliflower soup, and alfredo sauce.

     * Thyme – a friend of red meat, thyme can be used fresh or dried to enhance beef roast, steak, lamb, and even veal and more robust types of fish like tuna and marlin.

     * Garlic – not technically an herb, garlic is a must-have item in every kitchen. Keep the bulbs around along with a good garlic press, and use the powder for convenience when you want to put a dish together fast. Use it for soups, red meat, poultry, and of course Italian dishes.

Finding a nice set of kitchen stools is a matter of looking the right places. It helps if you know what you want before you go shopping so you don’t end up wasting your time looking at furniture that won’t meet your needs.

Be careful about false economy when shopping for kitchen stools. They might look good in the photo or in the showroom, but you’ll be disappointed when they start to break down six months after you buy them, or sometimes even sooner. If you’re buying a counter stool set only to look at, then by all means get the cheapest ones you can find. But if you actually want people to sit on them, then buy quality up front so you don’t end up paying for it later.

The internet is a great source of furniture bargains nowadays. Look for your kitchen stools on sites that just sell furniture, or even just kitchen stools. Don’t forget the two biggies, Amazon and Ebay. Although they might not have what you’re looking for, they’re a wonderful source of pricing benchmarks so you’ll know if the merchant you end up buying from is charging you too much. In any case, you’ll be amazed at the selection of merchandise online. Literally any style you’ve ever dreamed of is available.

As you’re doing your online search, save your favorite kitchen furniture sites in your “favorites” or “bookmarks” folder so you don’t lose your place. It helps to jot down some notes as you’re searching, because the overload of information can be overwhelming. In the end, you want to get a set of high quality kitchen stools at the price you would expect at Wal-mart.

If you’re really into getting deep discounts, consider buying used from craigslist. The advantage of this method is that the seller will be in your neighborhood, so you can go check out the merchandise in person and reject it if it doesn’t meet your needs. You’ll be out the cost of gas, but that’s a lot better than trying to get a refund from a seller you don’t know. Ebay also has a geographical setting to return results limited to a radius around your zip code so you can inspect the counter stools before you buy.

Bar stools are becoming a hot item in homes throughout the world. No matter what your decorating approach, you can find a type of bar stool to match. If you shop around, you can find a nice set of bar stools that meet your standards and match your decor. Not only that, you might find a bargain or two.

The swivel bar stool isn’t just for the bar. It’s an attractive, practical addition to any kitchen or casual room. These seats can rotate a full 360 degrees so you can face any direction you choose. They’re great for socializing and home entertaining, and can be very plain or high stylized. If you’re shopping for something unique, keep an eye your pocketbook, as these can get quite expensive. Try not to get carried away. Sometimes the simplest design is the best.

If the barstool doubles as a chair in your kitchen, then consider a model that has arms and a backrest. People will be much more comfortable with this model if they’re going to be sitting in them for long periods of time. You also should consider the body size of your family and friends. Big people need bigger furniture.

Seat cushions are also a must if your kitchen barstools are going to be anything more than decorative. The padding will be appreciated by the people who sit in them, and you’ll be making better use of your money by buying real furniture, instead of stylish pieces that aren’t really practical for sitting in.

Bar stools are so flexible. You’ll find your family and friends using them when meeting after work or in the evening to talk about the day. Because they allow the user to change positions frequently, they really promote socializing. As you might guess, they’re a huge hit at parties.

Another great place for bar stools is at a breakfast countertop, whether for breakfast or when serving light refreshments. Finally, try a set of them on a balcony overlooking the room below, for a bird’s eye view of your home.
