A beautiful door knob will have the same effect an accessory has on a plain dress, it gets noticed and enhances the whole look, and if it were not there the look would be lost.
People don’t think very much about door knobs but that is a mistake, because by changing a simple door knob we can have as much effect on a room as painting the wall or adding a rug. As a matter of fact the door knob market is growing considerably.
Until not so long ago we did not pay too much attention to this accessory but since decorators started putting them in value they have evolved too. In the past only classic materials were used, today you can find any type of material that you want from glass door knobs to ceramic not forgetting the large variety of available metals. Just as you can find a variety of metals you will find a choice of designs and a wide range of prices.
You should be careful however, not to go overboard. You must first know what kind of lock is installed on your door before you change the door knob. There are round type door knobs and some lever types. What you must pay attention to is the “spindle”, which is the metal part that hold both sides of the knob together. There are different formats and you should match that to your existing hardware, specially if you are replacing the knob on only one side of the door.
You should also be careful with the diameter of your round knob as if you choose one that is too big for your area, you might pinch your fingers every time you turn it to open the door.
Finally you should pay attention to the strike plate that hides the hole and mechanism. If you buy one smaller than the one you are replacing you could end up with a very unsightly result. With a brand new and beautiful door knob that would be too bad.
