Ways to Decorate Your Walls

Walls are blank canvases, really, and they are open to just about any sort of adornment that you see fit. Most folks go the way of the collage and put objects on the walls, such as photo frames, heads of dead animals, clocks, paintings, underwear, plates…whatever happens to make their skirt fly up. Others might actually paint an image right on their wall, and some might decide to turn their living room into the Bat Cave. In short, there are several ways to add a little flair to that boring living room, bedroom, kitchen, or bathroom wall. All it takes is a little thought, some money, and maybe a couple glasses of wine, depending on how short your patience is. Check out the suggestions below for some exciting wall decoration ideas.

• Paint and paper. If you don’t want to deal with the hassle of putting up wallpaper, get a few gallons of paint and shade the room in any color you want. If you’d prefer a pattern rather than a solid color, wallpaper may be the way to go. Or, you can make a delightful combination of the two elements by painting the wall a solid color, and adding a wallpaper border around the top, middle, or bottom of the wall.

• Lights. Yup, you can install lights on your wall too. I really haven’t seen these in too many places, but they’d definitely make a unique addition to any home in place of a typical floor or desk lamp. We advise against having a bug zapper in your living room, though.

• Photos and clocks . Well, you might only really need one clock on the wall in the room…unless you collect clocks. But a vast majority of people choose to decorate their homes’ walls with photos of family, friends, relatives, pets, possessions, hygiene products, tools, strangers, funny bathroom graffiti, and so forth.

• Metal and wood wall art. Okay, so maybe you don’t want to hang photos on your wall. You still have the option of hanging up some wooden or metal wall sculptures. Wrought-iron wall carvings are gorgeous and will fit in with just about any home’s design. Wooden art can come in a variety of colors, shapes, sizes and styles – you can find wood wall hangings that don’t even look wooden! Before going out and spending a load of money on something like this, I suggest hitting up eBay or local flea markets…if not for a purchase, than for some ideas.

• Painted or printed art. Not into sculptures? Put printed or painted artwork up on the wall instead. Some people may get drawings or paintings done of themselves, their dead relatives, or landscapes with which to beautify their home. And these can be either original works of art or framed prints; really, no one’s going to judge you if you have a print of something (heaven knows, it’ll be a lot cheaper).

• Wall murals. This involves having an image painted directly onto the wall, and it can be a graphic or a text. However, due to the introduction and subsequent popular use of vinyl wall decals (as seen below), wall murals are becoming less and less in demand.

• Wall decals. Basically, the same thing as a wall mural, only cheaper and you can remove it when you get tired of it (and also put it back if you miss it). You can get small 10”x10” wall quotes, or full-wall-sized stick-on murals. Now that is what I’d call awesome.

•Fabric. This one is kinda limited, but many people like to hang tapestries and quilts on their walls…if this appeals to you, then by all means, nail that quilt to the wall.

• Masks. No, I don’t mean a mask for the entire wall – that’s what the giant wall sticker-murals are for. By “masks”, I mean actual masks…like African masks, wooden masks, Asian masks, harlequin masks, cheap discount Halloween masks – whatever. If having a face on your wall freaks you out, you might want to avoid this option, especially since masks with no face behind them tend to have a strangely unsettling empty stare.
