Decorating with Patio String Lights

Patio string lights are incredibly versatile.  They come in every shape and color imaginable, and can be hung anywhere as long as their plug can reach an outlet.  On a patio, string lights make a great accent and add color and life to your design.  Here are some ideas for decorating with patio string lights.

For a party island feel, buy some brightly colored patio string lights.  There are many available online with palm trees and beaches painted on bright blue backgrounds.  Or, for a more authentic island feel, get some bamboo lights, which will be similar to tiki lights found in Hawaii.

You can also add to the natural feel of your garden area by purchasing leaf shaped patio string lights. These come in a huge range of colors, from purple to green to yellow, and can be complemented by flower shaped lights.  A subtle combination is cream colored leaves and fuschia lights, both of which give off a soft glow that will gently illuminate your patio.

Old fashioned metal lanterns add a whimsical touch to a patio setup.  You can bolster the effect by alternating strings of lantern lights with mesh cage cylinders.  Or, for an Oriental look, there are many variations of the Chinese lantern light available to purchase in both solid colors and prints.  There are also metal and mesh lantern shapes if color does not fit your theme.

Finally, patio string lights offer a unique option: rope lights.  Set in plastic, rope lights are similar to Christmas lights, only trapped inside plastic tubing.  They are usually sold in sections and can be of customizable lengths.  Rope lights are great for wrapping around columns or branches for some funky illumination.

Patio string lights range in price from $14.99 for a set of 10 to $12.50 for an individual light.
