Individual Furniture for the Home

With the introduction of IKEA and other homestores that provide cheap, generic furniture there is a growing trend for everyone’s home look like a showroom for that store. If you think about it why wouldn’t it – you go shopping for a specific piece of furniture for your living room only to find that that also have great deals on furniture for your bedroom, or soft furnishing for your lounge , or curtains. All of a sudden you buying all of this fantastically priced furniture and home accessories from the same store, and why wouldn’t you? It looks good and is the right price.

For those of you that are more design aware than others you will notice straight away when you walk in to a room that it looks like the ‘aforementioned’ store’s show room. There’s no real personality or individuality to it. I’m not saying that we shouldn’t shop at these megastores for home products but that we should be careful in what we buy from them and break up rooms with individual pieces of furniture that are unique.

Now, you might be thinking that individual and unique means big money – but this simply isn’t the case. You can make or renovate your own furniture for not a lot of money at all. Painted furniture is one of the easiest ways to get some personality in to your room. You will be able to find some absolute bargain furniture in recycling and charity shops so take a look around. You want to spot items that have potential – so try to ignore how they look now and try to think about how they could look. Once you’ve found a piece of furniture that you like the look of, get it home – give it quick rub down and give it a lick of paint in a color that matched your home décor.
