So-called lawn “experts” like those that are endorsing major fertilizer companies and also a lot of other online bloggers think that the best time for aerating your lawn is in fall. They say that fall aeration is great because it doesn’t spread weeds, and they say that fall aeration is great because it helps you prepare your lawn for the spring. In my opinion, these people are dead wrong. I have been aerating lawn for eight years, and probably done close to the 1000 lawns every year. These people are wrong and almost everyone knows it. This is why we have three times as many customers in the spring as we do in the fall. Most people know that the real-time to have a pretty lawn is in the summer and in the fall. Usually, the spring is the best time to repair your lawn from the damage that was caused to it over the winter. The best thing you can do to repair a lawn, is to aerate, fertilize and seed it.
When you aerate your lawn, you help to develop thicker to turf. Aerating is very nice on the levels of the soil because it helps to strengthen your system and helps to develop deeper roots as well. If you aerate in the fall, you’re going to be stimulating growth going winter, and this is not a high growing time of year for your lawn. Wouldn’t you rather stimulate your growth going into the spring and summer? It seems kind of like a no-brainer, but I guess that people who think that they are wise and intelligent about lawns, wants to kick against the grade. They want to prove that something exists when actually doesn’t, so they can show how smart they are.
It doesn’t make them smarter, it does make them wrong when they say that toleration is the best. If you were going to aerate your lawn the fall, I don’t think it would hurt. I would definitely want to overseed my lawn so that it would continue to grow all winter long.
