Kitchen Island Shapes and Styles

The kitchen island is something that has almost become a standard feature in the modern kitchen. Having that free standing area in the center of the room that gives you additional counter and cabinet space is very important. Many homes use the island for the stove top or sink so that the cook can be more social and still talk to guests and other family members while they work in the kitchen. Once, there was only one shape for kitchen islands, a rectangle. However, as they have become more popular, the styles and shapes have become more varied.
The most common shape is still rectangular, but there are some variations that have modernized even this shape. For example, if you want to be able to add seating to your island you cannot just have a rectangular box of cabinets with a counter on top. You want to counter to extend out further than the cabinets underneath on at least one side so that there will be a place for people to put their knees when seated at the kitchen island. Another variation is to have a small section of the rectangular island on a higher level. The last eighteen to twenty four inches can be raised so that the surface where people eat is slightly higher than the surface where food is prepared. The rectangular kitchen island will usually seat two to three people.
If you are interested in large kitchen islands with seating then you need to start thinking about alternative shapes. You can have an island with a kidney shape but more angular. That way, you can have seating down two sides of the island and still keep the area where people sit separate from the rest of the kitchen. Another alternative is to have an island that extends out of a wall. If your kitchen is smaller and you do not have room for an island that is freestanding in the middle of the room, you can have a countertop that extends out of the wall separating the kitchen from the rest of the house. What makes it like an island is that there is no wall behind this counter and instead you can use it from both sides. It is actually more like a kitchen peninsula.
