Mold and Mildew Are Not the Same Thing

Mold and mildew are not one and the same as many people are led to believe. However, they are both a form of fungus and both can cause health issues to both humans and pets as well as damage to the home if they’re left untreated. Both can be found almost anywhere in the home where it’s dark, damp or warm.

One of the most common things that allow these molds to grow is a to the change in the environment. When the temperature becomes warm and there is a high humidity level in the air, it provides a perfect breeding ground for mold.

Another perfect breeding area for fungus is on soil and dirty materials. Clothing is especially suitable for mold growth.

And the one that surprises most people is the greasy film that is found on most kitchen walls. Not only is it a gross looking mess, it’s also the perfect environment for molds to grow. And if you think your kitchen is perfectly safe from it, try looking behind your trashcan.

The good news is you can easily prevent these molds from finding a place in your home. You can start by keeping those areas where molds are likely to grow. No more bathroom mold!

You can also reduce excessive moisture by replacing cracked or defective mortar and repairing areas where water leaks have occurred. And if you have a basement, you’ll want to check the outside drainage to make sure it’s adequate.

Also, be sure your clothing dryer is equipped with some sort of vent and have it exhausted to the outside to prevent excessive moisture in the home.

And never allow clothing or other fabrics to lie around damp or wet. Always dry soiled towels or clothing before throwing them into the hamper, otherwise you may end up finding them covered in mold and mildew.
