There are so many reasons not to own a pool. To begin with, you have those hefty insurance costs. I was surprised how much adding a pool to my back yard could raise my monthly insurance premium for the rest of the year. It’s pretty insane.
Then you have all of that maintenance. The water is constantly trying to evaporate and has to continually be replenished, raising the water bill. And, if that is not enough of an insult, expensive chemicals must be re-added and balanced to keep algae and other annoying organisms from growing in the pool.
Of course we have not even yet gotten to the endless vacuuming on the weekends where you try to get all of the debris out of the bottom while the neighbor kids hang around clamoring for a chance to swim.
Yeah, pool ownership is glamorous.
There is a fascinating device that can make pool ownership just a little easier. Pool solar covers were originally designed as an easy way to extend the swimming season. By capturing solar heat inside of the pool, these solar covers can help cut the morning chill and extend the swimming season by several months.
However, it turns out these covers have some other great benefits. To begin with, they sit between the water and the air above, reducing the wicking effect of the air, decreasing how much water evaporates. Secondly, by covering the pool, they can also help reduce the amount of debris that find its way into the pool, meaning less time cleaning and more time swimming. A win-win for everyone.
A lot of people discredit solar energy, but for anyone who has priced the installation costs of a solar water heater, a pool solar cover is a no-brainer. Plus it can warm a pool by as much as 15 degrees with no electricity. Pretty impressive.
