The term bathroom remodel can scare some people off because it sounds like a huge undertaking. Many people dream of creating a huge bathroom with a spa tub or walk in shower. If you want to do a complete overhaul from top to bottom, you may be gutting the bathroom and starting over.
If a walk in shower won’t currently fit in your bathroom, you may worry that you are spending tons of money and time to add fancy extras that may seem too indulgent. But before you abandon the idea as totally impractical, consider the need for increased accessibility. You may not need it now, but is it something you may need in the next 10 years?
If you have a need for wheelchair access, then wider doors, and walk in showers are a good investment. Even without such a need, a bathroom remodel is a perfect time to shop for fixtures that are easier to use. Trade out small knobs that are hard to turn with slippery hands, for longer, easier to use handles. Many walk in showers are also built with a removable, hand-held shower head. This makes it easier to reach everywhere, especially if you have to (or simply want to) sit while in the shower. It can also be used to rinse off the shower itself when cleaning, another usability upgrade.
For many opening up a bathroom enough for a large shower may feel too indulgent. However, there are other, more practical reasons to add one. A big one of those reasons is the need for increased usability. Keep in mind the added ease with a large walk in shower as you take the time to dream up designs and look through books to get ideas. Mix and match what you would like with what fits in your budget and create a new bathroom that works for you – both now and in the future.
